Philosophy Behind the Harpocrates
In keeping with the Hephaestus Audio design philosophy (please see here and here), the Harpocrates is meticulously executed and all audible parameters are designed to be as smooth as possible. For example, components are placed to minimize interference, internal wiring is kept to an absolute minimum, and no connectors are used inside the amplifier – only solder. Frequency response, noise and distortion are all kept as smooth as possible across all operating ranges – from the threshold of hearing to the threshold of pain. The reason for taking pains to do this is that our brain is wired to be hypersensitive to change, much more so than to absolute value. The nature of our hearing is taken into account with the Harpocrates in order to give you the most engaging musical experience that your system is capable of.

Through the use of carefully selected components, optimum PC board layout, low noise grounding techniques, and excellent shielding the Harpocrates is capable of achieving a noise floor not generally seen in audiophile amplifiers – including the best linear amplifiers. Different theories abound as to the importance of distortion, however there is no disagreement that a lower noise floor results in greater perceivable detail and an improved listening experience.
